Setting up for opening of Darwin on a Whim

Friday March 2 will see an experimental opening take place at DVAA's Woods Street Gallery. Local band Green Stone Garden are collaborating with Digital artist Leanne Waterhouse.

Woods St Gallery- Darwin On A Whim
An experimental collaboration with local band Green Stone Garden and local digital media artists. This exhibition will be a performance that combines music with photographic projections!
Green Stone Garden is one of those bands whose name couldn’t be more fitting. Their songs grow stories; like the dense and rapid growth of the Darwin wet season around them. Bass, drums, synth and guitar underwrite Mike Meston’s lyrical narratives.

DEAF Space – iPhonography 101
Marie-Lise lavioltte is one of DVAA’s artist in residence and her latest exhibition includes 101 photographs, exclusively taken & edited through iphone.
Documenting Darwin, the Stuart Hwy, South Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory.
She works with the mediums of photography, painting, printmaking & Installation.

Watercolours – Alison Worsnop is offering tuition in traditional watercolour techniques to small groups at her home in Humpty Doo, during March. If you are interested, please email her direct on art@alisonworsnop.com. The cost is $60 per day plus materials (byo or buy) One course of 4 sessions will run on Thursdays, another at weekends. DVAA has challenged local Art educators to use their workplace to inspire their creativity. All we ask is as much time and materials as they can get away with.

Important dates and Exhibition opportunities in 2012

DVAA will be providing a few opportunities to take part in group shows during the first half of 2012.

April 27- May 18 – Landscapes in miniature (artworks responding to Michael Giacometti poem in collaboration with NT Writers Centre Word Storm Festival) Please see poem below.
Works must be at DVAA by Tuesday 24th and entry is $20

May 25 – June 16 – The Angry Show (DVAA members show)
Works must be at DVAA by Tuesday 22nd May

We will also have the Artist @ Work Exhibition March 30 – April 21. In 2012 DVAA are inviting arts educators to take part in this group show, therefore if you are an arts educator or know someone please pass on this opportunity and ask them to contact DVAA for more details.
Work must be at DVAA by 26th March and entry will be $15.

Proposals for DVAA’s exhibition program 2012

Darwin Visual Arts Association Inc. is a community based organisation dedicated to supporting the production, promotion and appreciation of Visual Art by local artists in all media, as well as increasing public awareness and audience participation in contemporary visual art in Darwin. As an Artists Run Initiative (ARI), DVAA provides young and emerging artists affordable exhibition space and promotional support through local and national art networks.

Proposals for Woods Street and DEAF Space Galleries

Exhibitions will occur each calendar month and will run for 3 weeks (Wed – Sat) and 4 weekends (Sat only) allowing for one week installation time (Tue – Fri) opening on the first Friday of each month.

Woods Street Gallery hire cost is $150 + GST Per Wk, plus $100 bond refundable after gallery has been returned to its original condition and the keys have been returned. Total payable on signing of agreement $595
DEAF Space Gallery hire cost is $80 + GST Per Wk, plus $100 bond refundable after the gallery has been returned ti it’s original condition and the keys have been returned. Total payable on signing of agreement $364

Artists are responsible for the following costs

1. Design, printing and postage of invitations. NOTE - Administrator can assist with design work if given enough notice.

2. Food for opening night (DVAA will provide all bar facilities)

· Once accepted, you will be required to meet with the administrator to discuss costs and responsibilities. A gallery agreement and timeline will be prepared for each exhibition.

· The artist must sit the gallery on Saturdays 10am-3pm

Selection Criteria:
1. Preference is given to DVAA members.
2. Preference is given to young and/or emerging artists.
3. Exhibitions should have a sound conceptual basis.
4. Work should demonstrate originality, innovation and have strong artistic merit.
5. DVAA supports community based exhibitions that have strong artistic merit.

6. Experimental works are encouraged.
7. Works in progress are considered especially for DEAF Space.
