An experimental collaboration with local band Green Stone Garden and local digital media artists. This exhibition will be a performance that combines music with photographic projections!
Green Stone Garden is one of those bands whose name couldn’t be more fitting. Their songs grow stories; like the dense and rapid growth of the Darwin wet season around them. Bass, drums, synth and guitar underwrite Mike Meston’s lyrical narratives.

DEAF Space – iPhonography 101
Marie-Lise lavioltte is one of DVAA’s artist in residence and her latest exhibition includes 101 photographs, exclusively taken & edited through iphone.
Documenting Darwin, the Stuart Hwy, South Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Proposals for DVAA’s exhibition program 2012

Darwin Visual Arts Association Inc. is a community based organisation dedicated to supporting the production, promotion and appreciation of Visual Art by local artists in all media, as well as increasing public awareness and audience participation in contemporary visual art in Darwin. As an Artists Run Initiative (ARI), DVAA provides young and emerging artists affordable exhibition space and promotional support through local and national art networks.

Proposals for Woods Street and DEAF Space Galleries

Exhibitions will occur each calendar month and will run for 3 weeks (Wed – Sat) and 4 weekends (Sat only) allowing for one week installation time (Tue – Fri) opening on the first Friday of each month.

Woods Street Gallery hire cost is $150 + GST Per Wk, plus $100 bond refundable after gallery has been returned to its original condition and the keys have been returned. Total payable on signing of agreement $595
DEAF Space Gallery hire cost is $80 + GST Per Wk, plus $100 bond refundable after the gallery has been returned ti it’s original condition and the keys have been returned. Total payable on signing of agreement $364

Artists are responsible for the following costs

1. Design, printing and postage of invitations. NOTE - Administrator can assist with design work if given enough notice.

2. Food for opening night (DVAA will provide all bar facilities)

· Once accepted, you will be required to meet with the administrator to discuss costs and responsibilities. A gallery agreement and timeline will be prepared for each exhibition.

· The artist must sit the gallery on Saturdays 10am-3pm

Selection Criteria:
1. Preference is given to DVAA members.
2. Preference is given to young and/or emerging artists.
3. Exhibitions should have a sound conceptual basis.
4. Work should demonstrate originality, innovation and have strong artistic merit.
5. DVAA supports community based exhibitions that have strong artistic merit.

6. Experimental works are encouraged.
7. Works in progress are considered especially for DEAF Space.

To Apply You Must Submit The Following

1. A description of the work intended for exhibition (This should be a concise outline of the conceptual premise, no more than 1 A4 page)

2. 4 quality images (preferably jpegs either by email or on cd) of the work to be shown or relevant previous work with Title, media, dimensions, date

3. A one – two page CV

4. Preferred gallery and a choice of 2 preferred time slots

This exhibition focuses on the way some artists collect and document the objects and experiences they encounter in their daily routines. Artists use whatever tools are to hand to undertake this process. One of the recent developments has been the use of digital cameras and phone cameras. These, thanks to their immediacy, become ways of gathering, of discovery, and of becoming quickly aware of what is possible and what to privilege.

The mechanism for the exhibition is built around a group of 13 artists, each showing a set of digital photographic images. These images come from the individual artist’s ‘collection’, but are not finished or resolved artworks in themselves. The images are the result of the artists’ ongoing engagement with their world, and, directly or indirectly, inform their practice. The content of the images reflect each artist’s process and the language of their practice. Each set of images is presented in their own digital photographic frame. As the images scroll through on each frame, a series of internal links, or narratives, become exposed, both within the artist’s chosen set of photos, and between all the artists’ works.

A key aspect of the exhibition’s evolution has been bringing together the chosen artists, many of whom don’t know each other, to create a transient community in which dialogue and debate play a role. This engagement mirrors and builds on the kinds of exchanges that are at play in the exhibition.

The title is from a "hot chip" song which has been my ringtone since moving to Darwin. The title represents the willingness to keep trying as you stumble over your mistakes, and when the dust settles you will be ready for the floor. Now that the dust has settled from our move from the desert to Darwin , I can look back at these works and see the happy accidents I made on the way.

Zoe Crowder graduated from RMIT with a Bachelor of Fine Art, majoring in Gold and Silversmithing, in 2001. Pursuing her practise, Zoe exhibited both locally and nationally. Eventually this would lead her overseas. Zoe took her skills to Laos, where she was a design advisor and trainer working for a Lao silversmithing company in the capital city of Vientiane. This experience helped Zoe realise how much her immediate environment influenced her design ideas and her overall approach to her craft.

On her return to Australia she moved her studio to the banks of the Yarra River at the Abbotsford Convent. Since 2007 her chosen environment has been Darwin in the Northern Territory where Zoe now balances her making with teaching.

In this workshop you will spend the day composing and constructing your own piece of jewellery in the relaxed environment of Zoe's own workshop at DVAA.

Using components that Zoe has collected over the years of being a jeweller/silversmith, you will piece together a necklace/bracelet using simple jeweller techniques. (There will be opportunity to embark on more challenging techniques if you desire)

When: Saturday, 10^th of September, 10am – 3pm (Lunch provided)

Where: In Zoe's studio work space at DVAA (Frog Hollow Centre for the Arts)

What to bring: Special charm or bead that you would like to incorporate into your piece (Optional)

What to wear: something comfortable that you don't mind getting dirty and closed in shoes

How much: $160 (This includes materials – sterling silver chain and clasps, semi precious beads etc.)

Min Wong is a Darwin based artist. She creates mixed media works and installations.

Can you describe your current work?
My current work is a mixed media installation. It has wallpaper, bird cages and found object installation. It has references to white colonialism and chinese practices. The materials are sourced from China and Australia/Darwin, referring to my heritage. I am interested in my own family history but also the long relationship the Chinese have had with Australia. This is a personal experience that also informs bigger interracial concerns that has plague Australia throughout history.
What is the intention behind your work?
This work has been developed from my Red Gate residency. This work is still evolving. I thought exhibiting at Deaf Space would be a good opportunity to create a playful work in a site specific space. My intention is to use this experience to further develop concepts and a complete body of work. This work speaks about response to environment and the complexities of mixing cultures and their outcomes.
What draws you to create installations?
I enjoy using different mediums and creating a work within a space and its confines. The negative space complements an installation if it is considered and engaging with the work. I am interested in the artwork challenging the space and also complementing it.
How did it feel to receive a residency and can you tell us a little bit about the experience?
it was a fantastic opportunity to be able to spend 5 weeks full time in a studio. I had previously been to China and applied while I was there to do a residency at Red Gate Gallery. Because of my origins, it has informed my work and allowed me to experiment with new materials and experience working an a different culture. The challenges of living in China, ie. a language barrier was a great inspiration that enriched my practice and enabled me to engage in a more realistic dialogue with my heritage and my artwork. I intend to maintain a relationship with China and to visit again.

Bill Davies Artist Profile

Bill tell us a little bit about your work.

Firstly I start with small pieces of paper and I screw them up, glue them down then I whipped it with rope and ink and then pulled all the paper apart and then images started to become quite figurative in one sense, where you ended up with a three dimensional look, not as in perspective but it was creating space. You are not drawing space by perspective you are actually drawing the space. That is what I am interested in. I am creating images where you are moving away from the two dimensions into the space.

In my work the creases become the lines also, you have the images on the paper, the stain and line but then the shapes of the piece itself, you start to look at that and they become the lines of the drawing. If I was to do a totally black piece, which I have done in the past, not for this exhibition, you would start to look at not the blackness but the shapes and they become the drawing.

It is almost sounds like a performance piece to create the work?

If you wanted me to mess the gallery up totally, I could because I use mops brooms, buckets of ink…

That would be wonderful to watch you could use half the space.

Bill starts shaking his head.

I get very messy, were I am working at the moment, which is a little workshop next to my house, I really only mess up the floor around the work. A while back I really made a mess as it wasn’t mine and it was only an industrial workshop, a shed, so I could afford to throw things around a bit.

Isn’t it interesting that the spaces that we have really determined what we do.

Yes we are.

How long have you been practicing?

Before I ever came to Darwin I did photography in a small country town and what I was doing was very experimental to what the camera club that I was with were doing. There were no opportunities in this place, I use to do experimental stuff with long exposures at night time.

When I was in school I was always into painting and drawing but it all got forgotten about. When I came to Darwin I changed my whole life style and I managed to get into uni and I went back to drawing and painting.

How long have you been in Darwin for?

Since 91 and I started uni back in 92, I concentrated on drawing and painting and I haven’t really gone back to photography. At times I would like too. I prefer drawing to painting. I don’t know why I just love the immediacy of it all.

Have you thought about combining photography and your drawing and painting?

I have thought about that now, taking some shots and then projecting them onto something, taking the shot again and manipulating and destroying the original image through technology.

Would you be interested in programs like photoshop?

Umm I don’t know about that. Photoshop would just be playing with the effects on photoshop itself and not really, I was looking at continually taking a shot, finding a way to project it, take another shot, project it onto something else and take another shot until I destroy that. Totally experimental to see what I would end up with. Really that is what I am doing with my drawing there is no planned starting point other then to just play with paper.

How do you know when to stop?

Sometimes I don’t. It doesn’t bother me, inevitably it is not the image itself on the paper totally, it’s the piece, until you put it up on the wall you just don’t know what you are going to get. You have no idea and once it comes down and off the wall you can never ever show it again like that, it’s impossible, you will never ever show that drawing again. You could put it up a dozen times and have a dozen different drawings. The rolls of paper are 10 metres long and I work on both sides.

Printmaking workshop with Basil Hall Editions

On the weekend 14th and 15th May 2011, members of DVAA took part in a two day printing making workshop at the Basil Hall Editions studio with the master printer Basil Hall himself.

DVAA members spent the two days learning a variety of techniques in dry point and etching.

Some participants worked on multiple plates while others focused on pushing the one plate in many different directions, using different tools to create marks, aqua tint to create tone or

sugar lift to add depth and layering.

DVAA Committee Project, Woods Street Gallery, May 2011

DVAA understands that NT artists are busy people. We work hard on our art but also devote much of our energy to other employment and community roles. Most of us would like to practice full-time but this is often impractical, both financially and conceptually.

The Artist @ Work project celebrates the artist as multi-tasker, creative in the arts and in the workforce. DVAA is committed to an inclusive artistic community, honouring and supporting the diversity of creative endeavours. Contemporary art responds to the everyday, and that includes how we spend most of the day – servicing others.

For this exhibition, members of the DVAA Committee and their colleagues rose to the challenge of making their workplace a creative space. According to last year’s Australia Council report ‘What’s your other job? A census analysis of arts employment in Australia’ (Cunningham & Higgs 2010), identified 24,000 people in artist occupations but statistics don’t allow for the myriad of individual creative pursuits.

The artists participating in this exhibition include occupations such as Sarah Pirrie and Talitha Kennedy whose art practice is quantified as academic research and lecturering; CONTACT _Con-3E062B1C2AF \c \s \l Leanne Waterhouse and Siying Zhou’s artistic dedication becomes professional in visual arts organisations DVAA and 24HR Art respectively; Bill Davies, Min Wong, Stan Whiting, Simone Porrovecchio and Sue Calman support the arts in creative roles such as graphic design and print media; and Eve Rivalland and Doug Wade bring creative vision even to the public service.

We hope this is the first in a series of projects that draws awareness to creativity as an asset in the broader community.

Mel Macklin’s Guide to Children’s Illustration #101
Ever thought: “When I grow up, I’d like to be a children’s book illustrator”? Then this workshop is for you! After a look at some of the world’s best, we’ll be creating characters, animating them, and developing storyboards of our very own. Participants will go home with at least one finished full-colour frame from their storyboard, and lots of ideas besides. Some drawing skills would be helpful in getting the most out of this workshop, but enthusiasm can work just as well.
Basic materials will be provided but participants are welcome to bring along their own, and/or any specialist equipment. Morning tea will also be provided.
Cost: $50 (this includes morning tea and basic art materials).

DVAA launches blog

Darwin Visual Arts Association Inc (DVAA) is a community based arts organisation dedicated to supporting the production, promotion and appreciation of visual art by local artists in all media, as well as increasing public awareness and audience participation in contemporary visual art in Darwin.

DVAA administers the following facilities and resources:

· Four affordable artists’ studios are available to DVAA members each providing excellent working conditions including air-conditioning and fan. Two of the studios have refrigerators and separate storage areas.

· The Woods Street Gallery, our main gallery offers an exhibiting space of a very high standard, encouraging a professional attitude towards the exhibition and promotion of art work

· Darwin Experimental Arts Foundation (DEAF) Space provides an alternative smaller and more casual exhibiting space encouraging works of an experimental nature.

DVAA also provides a support network aimed at providing relevant information to visual artists as well as providing assistance when required with funding and other applications. DVAA’S services are aimed at fostering ongoing artistic innovation and professional development for all artists in a supportive environment.
